• Had three customers maintain their budget for 90 days and one customer opened a savings account for their child.
• Had a customer who was able to take several collection items off of his credit report just by disputing it with the collection agency.

Marvin Gardner came to the Financial Resource Center a very stressed man.  Marvin had a lot of bills and he felt that his income would not sufficiently cover most of his bills.  On top of this, Marvin was struggling to pay his rent on time and he consistently paid late fees every month.  To make matters worse, Marvin had failed to file his tax returns for a few years, and he owed several thousand dollars in back state income tax.  All of this reality was weighing heavily on Marvin and he knew that change was needed! 

On Marvin’s initial visit to the Financial Resource Center, he completed a personal spending and savings plan.  This helped Marvin to get a visual of his net income as well as his expenses.  Kristine Darling, the Financial Literacy Coordinator, also connected Marvin with a tax advocate to address the back taxes that were owed.  This connection would help Marvin to get the good news that he had been looking for.  Marvin went from owing thousands of dollars in back taxes to receiving a $10 state refund check!  Additionally, Marvin recently paid off a garnishment that resulted from a previous car that was owned.

In just three months, Marvin has a much more positive outlook on his financial future.  When meeting with him, it is very noticeable that the financial burden he once carried is much lighter and he believes that he will take control of his financial future!  Marvin had the courage to face his financial hardships right in the eye and he is beginning to reap the rewards for taking these steps!
